Melrose is a moderncultivar of domesticatedapple which was developed by Freeman S. Howlett, William J. Eyssen and their team at theOhio Agricultural Experiment Station inOhio,United States,[1] and is regarded as the unofficial apple of that state.[2]

This apple was released by theOhio Agricultural Experiment Station inWooster, Ohio[2] duringWorld War II[3] and was obtained from a cross between theJonathan and theRed Delicious apples. The result is flattened large fruit, which is streaked and flushed with dark red over a background of yellowish-green skin, with spots ofrusset. The flesh is creamy white, of firm and coarse texture, and juicy. The flavor is mildly acidic,[2] similar toJonathan, but not as tart.[3]

Ready to eat.

It comes into season at the beginning of October.[where?][3]Cold storage 1-2 °C 100 days(180 days CA with scrubber).[4]
