Theblack pitohui (Melanorectes nigrescens) is a species ofbird in themonotypic genus ofMelanorectes in the familyPachycephalidae.It is found throughout the highlands ofNew Guinea.Its naturalhabitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowlandforests.
The black pitohui was originally described in the genusRectes (a synonym for the genusPitohui) and re-classified toMelanorectes in 2013.[2] Alternate names includeblack whistler anddusky pitohui.
