Melanocichla is agenus of birds in the Old World babbler familyTimaliidae.
The genusMelanocichla was introduced in 1883 by the English ornithologistRichard Bowdler Sharpe to accommodate a single species, theblack laughingthrush, which is therefore thetype species of the genus.[1][2] The name combines theAncient Greekmelas meaning "black" withkikhlkikhlē meaning "thrush".[3]
A 2019molecular phylogenetic study found that the genusMelanocichla wassister to the genusPomatorhinus containing the scimitar babblers.[4]
