Dr.Megan Lakshmi Srinivas (/ˈʃrɪniˌvɑːs/SHRIH-nee-VAHS) is an American politician and physician serving as aDemocratic member of theIowa House of Representatives for the30th district. Elected in November 2022, she assumed office on January 1, 2023.
Srinivas was born and raised inFort Dodge, Iowa. After graduating fromFort Dodge Senior High School as her class'svaledictorian, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in evolutionary biology fromHarvard University.[1] Srinivas earned aDoctor of Medicine from theRoy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine at theUniversity of Iowa and aMaster of Public Health from theHarvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.[2]
Srinivas was appointed to the Iowa Board of Education by GovernorTom Vilsack, making her the first student member in the Board's history. She served from 2003–2005.[3][4]
Srinivas completed an internal medicine residency at theJohns Hopkins School of Medicine and aninfectious disease fellowship at theUNC School of Medicine.[5][6] During theCOVID-19 pandemic in Iowa, Srinivas chairedBiden administration's COVID Response Council.[6] In 2018, she unsuccessfully ran forIowa's 9th District, her home district, spending less than half of her Republican opponent,Ann Meyer.[7] She remained at Chapel Hill as an infectious disease researcher and clinical instructor until 2022. Srinivas was elected to theIowa House of Representatives in November 2022.[8] Srinivas was reelected for a second term in November of 2024.[9]
Srinivas was selected as a Future Caucus Innovation Fellow for the 2024 Healthcare Innovation and 2025–2026 Prenatal-to-Three cohorts for young legislators invested in building bipartisan policy to address key healthcare issues.[10][11]
As of 2023[update], Srinivas resides inDes Moines.[6]
