Megadontosuchus is anextinctmonospecificgenus ofgavialoidcrocodylian,[1] traditionally regarded as a member ofTomistominae, from the middleEocene ofItaly. Fossils have been found fromMonte Duello in the province ofVerona. The genus is currentlymonotypic, with thetype and onlyspecies beingMegadontosuchus arduini. The species was originally named in 1880, although it was assigned to the genusCrocodilius (now spelledCrocodylus). The genus was first erected by paleontologistCharles C. Mook in 1955 along with the genusKentisuchus, which was also first classified asCrocodilius. Noholotype forMegadontosuchus was designated in 1880, and alectotype wasn't proposed until 2007.[2]

Megadontosuchus differs from other traditional "tomistomines" in that it has a more robustrostrum, very large teeth (hence the generic name meaningbig-toothed crocodile), and largesupratemporal fenestrae on theskull table.[2]
