The era ofKannada newspapers in Karnataka started in 1843 whenHermann Mögling, amissionary fromBasel Mission, published the firstKannada newspaper,Mangalooru Samachara, fromMangalore.[1] The first Kannada magazine,Mysuru Vrittanta Bodhini, was started by Bhashyam Bhashyacharya inMysore.[2] Shortly afterIndian Independence in 1948, K.N. Guruswamy started the companyThe Printers, Mysore Pvt. Ltd. publishing two newspapersDeccan Herald (in English) andPrajavani (inKannada).[3][4]Times of India is the largest selling English newspaper in Karnataka.[5] Tabloids includingLankesh Patrike andHai Bangalore Adi Jambava Jagruti emphasize controversial topics.[6]Sudharma,[7] the only daily newspaper published inSanskrit in India, is printed and distributed from Mysore.

All India Radio started inMysore, and has been functional in Bangalore since 1955.[10] Radio City FM was the first private radio station in Karnataka, beginning broadcasting in 2001.
