TheMazrui orMazar'i (Arabic:المزاريع) were anOmani Arab clan that reigned over some areas ofEast Africa, especiallyKenya, from the 18th to the 20th century. In the 18th century they governedMombasa and other coastal places[1] and opposed the OmaniAl Bu Sa'id Dynasty that ruled overZanzibar. On at least one occasion they attackedStone Town allying with thePortuguese.[2]
When theBritishEast Africa Protectorate was established in the late 19th century, the Mazrui were one of the groups that most actively resisted the British rule, along with theKikuyu andKamba people.[3]
