Mazhar ul Islam (Urdu:مظہرالاسلام) is a Pakistanishort story writer andnovelist. His short stories weave together themes of love, pain, ecstasy, separation and death.[1][2]

He was born on 4 August inWazirabad in northernPunjab[citation needed] where his father had then been posted by the Forestry Department. After his father's death in 1967, he moved toIslamabad.[citation needed]

Ul Islam's short stories reflect a new trend inUrdu prose.[citation needed] Influenced by the 'magical realism' of South American writers such asGabriel García Márquez,[citation needed], he introduced this style in his native language.[3] His works have been translated into Italian, Chinese, Japanese, English and several regional Pakistani languages[citation needed].

Mazhar ul Islam served as Director General of thePakistan Academy of Letters, as executive director ofLok Virsa and the managing director of theNational Book Foundation. He has been awarded the President's Pride of Performance for Literature and a medal for Revival of Folk Studies.[citation needed]
