Mus mayori is a species of rodent in the genusMus, the mice. Its common names includeMayor's mouse,highland rat,[1] andspiny mouse.[2] It isendemic toSri Lanka.[1]

This mouse lives in tropical and subtropical forest types and wetgrassland habitat. It isfossorial, seeking shelter by digging burrows. It isnocturnal.[1]

This species is widespread in parts of Sri Lanka but it faces a number of threats, includingdeforestation anddomestic cats.[1]

There are two subspecies,M. m. mayori andM. m. pococki. A recent study catalogued theparasites associated with subspeciespococki: amite of genusEchinolaelaps, atick of genusIxodes, and thesucking lousePolyplax spinulosa.[3] A new species ofpseudoscorpion was found on the mouse, described, and namedMegachernes kanneliyensis.[4] The mouse also carries the native Sri LankanfleaStivalius phoberus.[5]
