Maximites is a genus ofLate Carboniferousammonoids. Adult specimens werethe smallest known ammonoids, only at about 1 cm (0.39 in) in diameter of shells.[1] Fossils are found in various Late Carboniferous marine strata inNorth America.Maximites is thesole genus ofMaximitidae, one of twofamilies of the SuperfamilyPseudohaloritoidea, an important subgroup of theorderGoniatitida.
