Mavki'im (Hebrew:מַבְקִיעִים,lit. 'Breakthroughs') is amoshav in southernIsrael. Located nearAshkelon, it falls under the jurisdiction ofHof Ashkelon Regional Council. In 2023 it had a population of 515.[1]
The moshav was founded in 1949 as akibbutz bydemobilisedIDF soldiers who hadimmigrated fromHungary on land that had belonged to the Palestinian village ofBarbara.[2] Barbara was to be included as part of the Arab state in theUnited Nations Partition Plan for Palestine, but its inhabitants were forcefully expelled after theIsrael Defense Forces took the village from theEgyptian Army during the1948 Arab–Israeli War. After the war the Israeli government forbade the Palestinian residents to return.[3] In 1954 it was converted to a moshav shitufi. Its name refers to the IDF breakthrough against theEgyptian army in the area during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War.[citation needed]
In 2005 the moshav absorbed 25 families who were evacuated fromPe'at Sadeh as part ofIsrael's unilateral disengagement plan, which withdrew from settlements in the Gaza Strip considered illegal under international law.[citation needed]
