Maungaharuru Tangitū is a collective ofMāorihapū (subtribes) of theNgāti Kahungunuiwi inHawke's Bay, New Zealand, who joined forces forTreaty of Waitangi settlement negotiations.[1] Thehapū areMarangatūhetaua (also known asNgāti Tū), Ngāi Tauira,Ngāi Te Ruruku ki Tangoio,Ngāi Tahu,Ngāti Kurumōkihi (formerly known asNgāi Tatara) andNgāti Whakaari. The group'srohe (tribal area) ranges fromBay View in the south to the Waitaha Stream (just north of theWaikari River) in the north, and from theMaungaharuru Range in the west to the sea inHawke Bay,[1] that part of the sea being known as Tangitū.[2]
Thehapū have onemarae, the Tangoio Marae at the rural locality ofTangoio,[3] about 20 kilometres north ofNapier. Pūnanga Te Wao is the name of themeeting house.[4] In October 2020, the Government committed $6,020,910 from theProvincial Growth Fund to upgrade it and 18 other Hawke's Bay marae, creating 39 jobs.[5]
