Matteo Arnaldi (born 22 February 2001) is an Italian professionaltennis player. He has a career highATP singles ranking of world No. 30, achieved on 12 August 2024, and a doubles ranking of No. 286, achieved on 8 August 2022.[2] He is currently the No. 7 Italian.[3] Representing Italy, he was part of the victoriousItalian team at the2023 Davis Cup, and won thegold medal at the2022 Mediterranean Games in men's doubles.

2022: ATP and Masters debuts, Maiden Challenger title

Arnaldi made his ATP main draw debut at the2022 Rome Masters after receiving a wildcard into the singles and doubles main draws.[4] He received these wildcards by winning the pre-qualification wildcard tournaments in both singles and doubles.[5] He won his maiden Challenger title at the2022 Internazionali di Tennis d'Abruzzo as a wildcard defeatingFrancesco Maestrelli.

FollowingHolger Rune's withdrawal to be first alternate at the2022 ATP Finals, Arnaldi gained entry to participate in the2022 Next Generation ATP Finals.[6]

2023: Major & top 100 debuts, Maiden Major & Masters & top 10 wins, top 50

Following his third Challenger win at the2023 Murcia Open,[7] he reached a career-high ranking of No. 102 on 10 April 2023.

Ranked No. 105, he qualified for the ATP 5002023 Barcelona Open and won his first round match againstJaume Munar.

Next he qualified for the2023 Madrid Open for his first Masters of the season and only the second overall and won his first Masters 1000 match over fellow qualifierBenoit Paire. Next, he upset world No. 4 and third seedCasper Ruud in straight sets for his first career top-10 win, to reach the third round of a Masters for the first time.[8] As a result he made his debut into the top 100 at No. 99 in the rankings on 8 May 2023.[9]

He received a wildcard for the main draw at theItalian Open,[10] where he defeatedDiego Schwartzman in the first round.[11]

On his Grand Slam debut he qualified for the2023 French Open and recorded his first win againstDaniel Elahi Galán. As a result, he reached a new career high ranking of No. 72 on 12 June 2023.He also made his debut at the2023 Wimbledon Championships.[12]

InUmag, Arnaldi beat qualifierJesper de Jong, qualifierFlavio Cobolli and top seedJiří Lehečka to reach his first ATP semifinal, only losing to the eventual championAlexei Popyrin in more than 3 hours of play.[13]

InToronto, Arnaldi qualified and recorded his first ever Masters 1000 win on hard courts beating local wildcardVasek Pospisil in the first round, then fell to World No. 3Daniil Medvedev in the second.[14] As a result, he reached a new career-high ranking of No. 61 on 14 August 2023. He reached the top 50 at No. 47 on 11 September 2023, following a fourth round showing at theUS Open with wins overJason Kubler,Arthur Fils in five sets and an upset over 16th seedCameron Norrie in the third round.[15]

At the start of his first Asian swing he qualified for the ATP 500China Open and reached the second round defeating fellow qualifierJJ Wolf. At the2023 Rolex Shanghai Masters he defeatedAlexei Popyrin and upset 21st seedJan-Lennard Struff to reach the third round.[16]

He won the2023 Davis Cup with team Italy.[17]

2024: Major fourth round, First Masters semifinal, top 30

He recorded his first win at the2024 Australian Open defeating wildcardAdam Walton. He reached the top 40 at No. 38 on 29 January 2024.

Ranked No. 43 at the2024 Delray Beach Open he defeatedYoshihito Nishioka firing 21 aces and recording 50 winners.[18][19] At the2024 BNP Paribas Open he reached the second round defeatingLuca Van Assche. At the2024 Miami Open he reached the third round for the first time at this Masters and only for the third time at this level, defeatingArthur Fils and 17th seedAlexander Bublik. He defeatedDenis Shapovalov to reach the fourth round of a Masters for the first time in his career. As a result he reached the top 35 in the rankings on 1 April 2024.

At the beginning of the clay season, at the2024 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, he reached the quarterfinals with a defeat ofArthur Cazaux by retirement, and of two Argentines, eight seedSebastian Baez and qualifierMarco Trungelliti.

In May, at the2024 French Open he upset sixth seedAndrey Rublev to reach the fourth round for the first time at this Major.[20]

At the2024 National Bank Open he reached the semifinals for the first time at a Masters level, having never get past the fourth round, defeating qualifierMackenzie McDonald and upsetting 16th seedKaren Khachanov, previous year semifinalistAlejandro Davidovich Fokina by retirement andKei Nishikori.[21] As a result he reached to the top 30 in the singles rankings on 12 August 2024.[22][23] He lost toAndrey Rublev in straight sets.[24]
