Mattathias ben Theophilus (Hebrew:מתתיהו בן תאופילוס; died c. 66 CE) was the Jewish High Priest (Kohen Gadol)[1] at the start of theJewish Revolution, and was overthrown by Revolutionary forces.
A minority of scholars believe him to be the same as theTheophilus mentioned in the New Testament books ofLuke 1:3 andActs 1:1.[citation needed] One author argues that Mattathias ben Theophilus was the father ofJosephus.[2]
