Ancient Scottish headdress

Thematron's badge orbrèid is a gentlewoman'sheaddress worn in theScottish Highlands in former times. It consists of a square of finelinen, pinned round thehead, fastened with cords ofsilk orgold. The matron's badge was donned by a woman the morning after hermarriage, and was regarded as the badge of wifehood.
