Matilda De Angelis (Italian pronunciation:[maˈtildadeˈandʒelis]; born 11 September 1995) is an Italian actress and singer. She made her film debut inMatteo Rovere’sItalian Race (2016), which earned her nomination forDavid di Donatello for Best actress. She also appeared inAlessandro Gassman’sThe Prize (2017),Youtopia (2018), and inSydney Sibilia’sRose Island (2020), in which the latter, she won aDavid di Donatello and aNastri d'Argento. In 2025, she portrayed a vampire inLuc Besson'sDracula.

On television, she is known for her roles in theNetflix seriesThe Law According to Lidia Poët (2023–2024)[1] and theHBO miniseriesThe Undoing (2020).[2] She has also sung in soundtracks and recorded solo singles, including the collaboration "Litoranea" withElisa.

Career

De Angelis started playing guitar and violin at the age of thirteen.[3] She attended theliceo scientifico "Enrico Fermi" inBologna.[4] In 2011, De Angelis began singing in the band Rumba de Bodas.[2] The band also recorded an album,Karnaval Fou, which was released in 2014.[5]

In 2015, she was noticed by directorMatteo Rovere, who cast her as the lead in his filmItalian Race (2016).[2][3] According to De Angelis, Rovere

saw some of my pictures on Facebook and he wanted to meet me because they were searching for the leading role in this new film and the director didn't want to get a professional actress because he needed a specific dialect from a specific region in Italy (Emilia Romagna). So, I went to the audition and after, he told me: "You have to do it again, but with a script" and I had three or four auditions after that and then, I got the part.[3]

For her debut role, De Angelis was nominated for the 2017David di Donatello film award forBest Actress; she also wrote and sang the film's song "Seventeen", which received a nomination for Best Original Song at the same award ceremony.[6] She was also awarded aFlaiano Prize and aNastro d'argento for the Best Newcomer.[7][8]

In 2017, she played the role of Brittia in the ensemble comedy filmThe Prize byAlessandro Gassmann.[9][10] In 2018, she starred in the drama filmYoutopia, where she played a teenage girl selling her virginity online in order to save her family.[3][11][12]

In 2020, she was in the main cast of theHBO television miniseriesThe Undoing[2] and starred in theNetflix original filmRose Island, directed bySydney Sibilia.[13] For her role inRose Island she was awarded theDavid di Donatello for Best Supporting Actress.[14]

De Angelis co-hosted the first date of theSanremo Music Festival 2021 alongsideAmadeus.[15] The same year she acted in Italian filmsA Bookshop in Paris andAtlas, the latter for which she was awarded Best Actress at theTaormina Film Fest.[16] In 2022 she acted inRobbing Mussolini and starred alongsideLiev Schreiber in the film adaptation ofErnest Hemingway's novel with the same nameAcross the River and into the Trees.[17] The same year she collaborated on the third single "Litoranea" fromElisa's studio albumRitorno al futuro/Back to the Future, being De Angelis first certified song byFIMI.[18]

In 2023 she played the lead role in the Italian miniseriesThe Law According to Lidia Poët, for which she received aNastro d'argento award nomination for best actress, and which won the award for Best Crime Series.[19][20] Between 2023 and 2024 she acted in the lead role ofAmazon Prime Video television seriesCitadel: Diana.[21]

In 2025, she played a vampire inLuc Besson'sDracula and played the leading role inSiblings (La vita da grandi), directed byGreta Scarano,[22] and inMario Martone'sFuori, which premiered at the78th Cannes Film Festival.[23] She participated in the2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony, held inMilan'sSan Siro stadium.[24]

Personal life

De Angelis was named afterNatalie Portman’s character inLéon: The Professional.[25]

Since 2022, De Angelis has been in a relationship with Alessandro De Santis, singer and frontman of musical duoSanti Francesi. They became engaged in 2024.[26] She moved toRome in 2014 and eventually toMilan to be with her partner.[25]
