Mathieu Amalric (French pronunciation:[matjøamalʁik]; born 25 October 1965)[1] is a French actor and filmmaker. He has won severalCésar Awards and theLumière Awards.

He is best known internationally for his roles in theJames Bond filmQuantum of Solace, in which he played the lead villain,Steven Spielberg'sMunich,Wes Anderson'sThe Grand Budapest Hotel andThe French Dispatch, and for his lead performance inThe Diving Bell and the Butterfly, for which he drew critical acclaim.

Early life

Amalric was born on 25 October 1965 inNeuilly-sur-Seine, a suburb of Paris. He is the son ofJacques Amalric, a French native who worked as a foreign affairs editor forLe Monde andLibération, and Nicole Zand, a literary critic forLe Monde, who was born in Poland toJewish parents and moved to France at the outbreak ofWorld War II.[2][3]

Amalric first gained fame in the filmMa Vie Sexuelle (My Sex Life...or How I Got Into an Argument), for which he won aCésar Award.

In 2007, he starred in the critically acclaimed movieThe Diving Bell and the Butterfly, portrayingJean-Dominique Bauby, a journalist who learned to communicate throughpartner-assisted scanning after a stroke left him suffering fromlocked-in syndrome.[4] Amalric's performance was universally acclaimed, and he won theCesar Award for Best Actor.[5]

He was selected to play theJames Bond villainDominic Greene alongsideDaniel Craig (with whom he had previously starred inMunich) in the 2008 filmQuantum of Solace.[6]

His 2010 film,On Tour, premiered at the2010 Cannes Film Festival and won Amalric theBest Director Award.[7]

The 2014 filmThe Blue Room, which he directed and starred in, was selected to compete in theUn Certain Regard section at the2014 Cannes Film Festival.[8]

Personal life

Amalric has three sons, two with French actress and singerJeanne Balibar, and one with theater director and writerStéphanie Cléau.[9] From 2019 - 2024 he was in a relationship with Canadian soprano and conductorBarbara Hannigan.[10][11]

He supports theGirondins de Bordeaux football club.
