TheMaspero (Arabic:ماسبيرو Egyptian Arabic pronunciation:[mæsˈbiːɾu,-piː-]) is the headquarters of theEgyptian Radio and Television Union, Egypt's state television broadcaster.[1] It is located on the bank of theNile River inCairo, Egypt.[2]
Gamal Abdel Nasser, the President of theUnited Arab Republic (of whichEgypt was then a part) ordered the construction of the building in August 1959. The first broadcast from Maspero commenced on 21 July 1960 with the country's introduction of television on the eighth anniversary of theEgyptian Revolution of 1952. It was built on an area of 12,000 square metres, with a budget ofE£108,000. The building was named after the French archaeologistGaston Maspero, who was the chairman of theEgyptian Antiquities Authority.
In October 2011, theEgyptian Army and state security forces killed 26 people—of whom at least 21 wereCopts—duringdemonstrations outside of the building.[2]
