Mary Ann Xantippe "Tip"Saunders (January 1, 1838 – December 4, 1922) was an American portrait painter and art teacher.
She studied art underCornelius Pering, and became friends with his daughterCornelia Pering, also an artist. In New York, she studied underLemuel Wilmarth and in the studio ofJoseph Oriel Eaton.[1] She and Cornelia Pering started the Pering andSaunders Art School inLouisville, which they ran from the 1890s untilWorld War I.[2]
In 1856, Saunders graduated cum laude atGreenville Institute atHarrodsburg, Kentucky. She was popular through her young adulthood. During theAmerican Civil War, her betrothed was killed in action. After the Civil War, she studied art in earnest, both under Cornelius Pering and at theCooper Union Academy of Design, focusing onportrait painting. She then returned toLouisville, Kentucky, to teach art.[3]
Saunders was a cousin ofMark Twain, and painted a famous portrait of him in 1873.[4]
Xantippe Saunders died on December 4, 1922, and is interred inCave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.[5][6]
