Martin William Kratt (born December 23, 1965) is an American zoologist, educational nature show host andYouTuber. He and his brotherChris created the children's television seriesKratts' Creatures andZoboomafoo, as well asBe the Creature, which runs on theNational Geographic Channel andKnowledge Network. They are the main characters on the animated television seriesWild Kratts, which airs onPBS Kids.
A grandson of musical-instrument manufacturer William Jacob Kratt Sr.,[1] Martin was born on December 23, 1965, in New Jersey to William (born 1928) and Linda (born 1939). He and his younger brotherChris grew up inWarren Township, New Jersey,[2] They attendedWatchung Hills Regional High School. Martin attendedDuke University where he majored in zoology. He became a research assistant for a howler monkey project under Dr. Kenneth Glander in Costa Rica.
Shortly after graduating from Duke, Martin worked with Dr. Patricia Wright in Madagascar as well as Dr. John Terbogh in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.[3] Martin and Chris together created the children's television seriesKratts' Creatures andZoboomafoo, as well asBe the Creature, which runs on theNational Geographic Channel andKnowledge Network. They are the main characters on the animated television seriesWild Kratts, which airs onPBS Kids. The other show he created is called Wild Alaska Live.[4] They also appear as themselves in theOdd Squad episode "Night Shift".
Martin married Laura Wilkinson in 2000 and has two sons,Gavin (born 2001), a punk rapper, andRonan (born 2003), a soccer player[5] both of whom have had roles onWild Kratts. As of 2008, Martin and his brotherChris lived inOttawa, Ontario,[6] where their seriesWild Kratts was produced.[7]
Both Martin and Chris were inducted into their high school's hall of fame in 2013.[8]
