Martigues (Occitan:Lo Martegue in classical norm,Lou Martegue in Mistralian norm) is acommune northwest ofMarseille. It is part of theBouches-du-Rhônedepartment in theProvence-Alpes-Côte d'Azurregion on the eastern end of the Canal de Caronte.

Martigues was founded byRamon Berenguer IV,count of Provence in 1232 on the likely site of theRoman camp Maritima Avaticorum.

The nearest airport isMarseille Provence Airport (MRS), which is 14.52 km (9 miles) away.[7]
