Martenshoek (Dutch pronunciation:[ˌmɑrtənsˈɦuk]) is a neighbourhood ofHoogezand and former village in theDutch province ofGroningen. It is located in the municipality ofMidden-Groningen, about 2 km west of the town of Hoogezand.[3]
The village was first mentioned in 1652 as St. Martenshoek, and means "neighbourhood withMartin of Tours as a patron saint".[4] Martenshoek developed near thesluice on theWinschoterdiep. It was the gateway to thepeat colonies, and developed into a trade and industry centre.[5]
Martenshoek was home to 570 people in 1840.[5] In 1905, a railway station opened in the village.[6]
Martenshoek forms a single urban area withHoogezand and is considered a neighbourhood of Hoogezand. A large part of the neighbourhood consists of industry.[5]
