Martebo (Swedish pronunciation:[ˈmâʈːɛˌbuː])[3] is a populated area, asocken (not to be confused withparish), on the Swedish island ofGotland.[4] It comprises the same area as theadministrative Martebo District, established on 1 January 2016.[5] As of 2020, the total population of Martebo is 150.[6]
Martebo is the name of thesocken as well as the district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding themedievalMartebo Church,[7] sometimes referred to asMartebo kyrkby. It is situated in the northwest part of Gotland.[8] The area is mainly farmed land, some of it on part of a drained mire. This is where the notedMartebo lights can be seen.[9]
As of 2019[update], Martebo Church belongs to Stenkyrkaparish in Norra Gotlandspastorat, along with the churches inStenkyrka,Tingstäde andLummelunda.[10][11]
One of theasteroids in theAsteroid belt,3250 Martebo, isnamed after this place.[12]
