Martín González was in Spain'sgazetteers[6] until Puerto Rico was ceded bySpain in the aftermath of theSpanish–American War under the terms of theTreaty of Paris of 1898 and became anunincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, theUnited States Department of War conducted acensus of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Martín González barrio was 708.[7]
