Mark Andrew Ferguson[1] (born 11 March 1985[2]) is a British politician, journalist, and trade unionist. He became theLabourMember of Parliament (MP) forGateshead Central and Whickham at the2024 general election.[3]

Early life

Ferguson grew up inGateshead, and attendedRyton Comprehensive School.[4][5] He studied social and political science atRobinson College, Cambridge, and was President of theCambridge University Students' Union (CUSU) from 2006 to 2007.[5][6][7]

Career

Ferguson has worked as a journalist and trade unionist.[4] He is a former editor of the Labour-supportive websiteLabourList.[4] Ferguson was a trade unionist representative on theNational Executive Committee of the Labour Party.[8] As part of his role on Labour's NEC, he chaired debates at party conference in 2021 and received media attention after telling delegates that there were "too many white men putting their hands up.”[9]

Ferguson was selected as theprospective parliamentary candidate forGateshead Central and Whickham, to succeed retiring Labour MPIan Mearns (Gateshead).[10] He won the constituency in the 2024 general election with a majority of 9,644 votes.[3]

In November 2024, Ferguson voted in favour of theTerminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which proposes to legaliseassisted dying.[11]

In theSeptember 2025 cabinet reshuffle Ferguson was appointed to the ministerial position ofassistant government whip.[12]
