Andrew Mark Chapman (nicknamed "Chappers") (born 11 October 1973) is a British television and radio sports presenter. He is a co-lead presenter of BBC'sfootball coverage programmeMatch of the Day, following the departure ofGary Lineker,[1] having previously presentedMatch of the Day 2 during Lineker's time at the BBC. He is also involved inSky Sports's coverage of theEFL Cup.[2]

Chapman is also arugby league presenter, hosting the BBC's coverage of theRugby League World Cup andRFLChallenge Cup matches.[3] He also hostsSports Report onBBC Radio 5 Live, one of the longest-running programmes on British radio, andThe Monday Night Club.[4]

Early life

Chapman was born atBirch Hill Hospital inWardle, nearRochdale,Lancashire, but spent most of his youth inSale on the other side of the city ofManchester.[5] He attendedManchester Grammar School, and during his time there developed an interest in radio, wanting to work for Radio 1 from the age of 13. He went on to gain a degree inFrench and Business Studies from theUniversity of Hull.[6][7]

Broadcasting career

Chapman began his career in 1996 as acontinuity announcer on BBC Television, primarily working onBBC One andBBC Two, before becoming the cricket correspondent for BBC North East radio.[8]

Chapman then joinedBBC Radio 1 as aNewsbeat sportsreader working onSara Cox's show and later onScott Mills's show, where he was nicknamed Chappers, before joiningBBC Radio 5 Live to host5 Live Sport on Monday evenings in 2010.[9] Between 2009 and 2013, Chapman was the main stand in presenter onFinal Score,Match of the Day 2 and otherBBC Sport programmes as well as co-hostingPardon The Interruption and live football events onESPN. Following the departure ofColin Murray, Chapman became the main host ofMatch of the Day 2 in August 2013.[10][4] 2013 also saw Chapman promoted toBBC Sport' chief rugby league presenter ahead of the2013 Rugby League World Cup, fronting the BBC's coverage of the tournament.[11]

For theLondon 2012 Olympics, Chapman broadcast daily onBBC Radio 5 Live withVictoria Derbyshire, covering that morning's action.[12] For theRio 2016 Games, Chapman again presented coverage on5 Live, as well presenting television coverage for theBBC each evening withClare Balding.[13] For the delayedTokyo 2020 Olympics, Chapman presentedOlympic Breakfast withRachel Burden on5 Live.[14] For theParis 2024 Olympics, Chapman hosted coverage on5 Live throughout the afternoon from Paris, as well as presenting a nightly TV highlights show withIsa Guha.[15]

At theGlasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Chapman presented a nightly highlights show withClare Balding for the BBC.[16]

In August 2016, Chapman replacedMark Pougatch as the main presenter of5 Live Sport on Saturday afternoons, and he continues to host the Monday evening edition of the programme alongside other midweek shows.[4] In 2016, he became the presenter ofThe NFL Show andNFL This Week, withOsi Umenyiora andJason Bell. He left the show in November 2020.[17] In 2017, he fronted BBC's coverage of the2017 Rugby League World Cup.[18]

In May 2022, in addition to his work with the BBC, it was announced that Chapman had joined Sky Sports to present its coverage of theCarabao Cup.[19]

In September 2022, Chapman was announced as the BBC's main presenter for the2021 Rugby League World Cup, fronting the coverage for a third consecutive tournament.[3]

Career

Chapman became Chair of the Board for theManchester Originals cricket team forThe Hundred in July 2021.[20]

In November 2022, Chapman extended his sports portfolio to become Non-Executive Director atVanarama National League team, Altrincham Football Club.[citation needed]

Charitable work

In March 2008, Chapman andComedy Dave ran a mile at all 20English Premier League clubs and the 12Scottish Premier League clubs.[21] In the same year, he also completed theLondon Marathon for children's cancer charityCLIC Sargent; repeating the feat in 2010. In 2012, Chapman was part of a team that cycled fromLand's End to John o' Groats in aid of the Donna Louise Children's Hospice Trust inStoke-on-Trent.[8]

Writing

Chapman wrote a regular column forShoot Monthly magazine. In 2010, he released his first book, entitledHeroes, Hairbands and Hissy Fits: Chappers' History of Modern Football.

Personal life

Chapman married his wife Sara in 2001. They had three children together – Ben, Jessie and Millie.[22] Chapman and his wife lived inHale, Greater Manchester until her death from cancer in 2020.[23][24]

Chapman is a Manchester United football fan. He is also a fan ofHull F.C. owing to his time at university in Hull. He is a fan of theChicago Bears in theNFL.[25]
