Mark Watts Bryant (born 8 October 1949) is a retired BritishAnglican bishop. From 2007 to 2018 he was theBishop of Jarrow, thesuffragan bishop of theDiocese of Durham in theChurch of England.[2]
Bryant was born on 8 October 1949 and educated atSt John's School, Leatherhead. He went on to study atSt John's College,Durham University,[1] whence he graduated with aBachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1972, and then trained for the ordained ministry atCuddesdon College for three years.[3]
Bryant was made adeacon atPetertide 1975 (29 June),[4] andordained apriest the Petertide following (27 June 1976), both times byDavid Brown,Bishop of Guildford, atGuildford Cathedral.[5] He served his title (curacy) atAddlestone, Surrey from 1975, and moved toUpper Studley, Trowbridge, Wiltshire in 1979, serving as chaplain toTrowbridge College and licensed as an assistant priest at St John the Evangelist, Studley. He was thenvicar of that parish from 1983 until his move to Warwickshire in 1988 to become Vocational Development Adviser andDiocesan Director of Ordinands (DDO; head of the Vocations and Training department) for theDiocese of Coventry. Additionally, from 1993 to 2001 he was anhonorary canon ofCoventry Cathedral. In 1996, he moved to becomeTeam Rector of theCaludonTeam Ministry, covering the Coventry suburbs ofStoke,Stoke Aldermoor andWyken, becoming alsoArea Dean ofEast Coventry from 1999. He wasArchdeacon of Coventry from 2001 to 2007 and, from 2006, also aCanon Residentiary of Coventry Cathedral.[1][3]
In 2007, Bryant was appointed to becomeBishop of Jarrow, the solesuffragan bishop of theDiocese of Durham. He was consecrated as a bishop byJohn Sentamu,Archbishop of York, inYork Minster on 13 September 2007,[6] and welcomed to the diocese in a special service inDurham Cathedral on 16 September 2007.[7] He retired on his 69th birthday, 8 October 2018.[8]
Bryant has been married since 1976 and they have three adult children; his interests include classical music, walking and the arts.[9][10]
