Marius de Vries (born 1961) is an English record producer and composer. He has won aGrammy Award from four nominations, twoBAFTA Awards, and anIvor Novello Award.[1]

Education

Marius de Vries was educated atSt Paul's Cathedral School,Bedford School (between 1975 and 1980) and then atPeterhouse, Cambridge.[2]

Recording artists he has collaborated with includeBjörk,Madonna,Massive Attack,David Bowie,U2,FKA twigs,Rufus Wainwright,Chrissie Hynde,Neil Finn,Annie Lennox,Bebel Gilberto,David Gray,P.J. Harvey,Elbow,Josh Groban,Alice Martineau andMelanie C.

De Vries served as the executive music producer for the 2016 filmLa La Land and produced the accompanyingsoundtrack.[3][4] He also co-wrote the song "Start a Fire" alongsideJohn Legend,Justin Hurwitz, and Angelique Cinelu, and had a small role in the film as a casting director.

Composer/film scores

De Vries was the music director of the 2001 filmMoulin Rouge! and worked withNellee Hooper on thefilm soundtrack ofRomeo + Juliet as co-composer, programmer, and co-producer. Both of these projects won de VriesBAFTA awards, and he was awarded anIvor Novello Award for his compositional work on the former.[citation needed]

He also wrote the scores forStephan Elliott's surreal thrillerEye of the Beholder[citation needed] as well as Elliott's adaptation of theNoël Coward comedyEasy Virtue. The latter is notable musically for using the real singing voices of leading actorsBen Barnes,Jessica Biel, andColin Firth.[5]

In 2010, he co-wrote the score ofKick-Ass withJohn Murphy,Henry Jackman andIlan Eshkeri. He co-produced, along withTyler Bates andZack and Deborah Snyder, and performed onthe soundtrack of Snyder's 2011 filmSucker Punch.[citation needed]

In 2020 and 2021, he composed the score forSian Heder'sCODA, which won Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards, and served as executive music producer onLeos Carax'sAnnette.[6]

De Vries' most recent scores are forDaniel Roher'sNavalny - which won Best Documentary at the 2023 Academy Awards, and, withJoshua Schmidt, forJoshua Oppenheimer's apocalyptic musical film,The End, starringTilda Swinton.
