Mario Antonio Núñez Villarreal (born 2 March 1976) is a Chilean formerfootballer well remembered for his spell atO'Higgins. He played as astriker.

Club career

A product of theO'Higgins youth system, Núñez is one of the historical goalscorers of the club.[1] As a member of them, he got promotion to the1999 Primera División after being the runner-up in the1998 Primera B alongside players such asDarío Gálvez,Pedro Rivera,Rolando Azas, among others.[2] In the1999 season, he became the top goalscorer of the league.[3]

Abroad, he had stints withIndependiente in Argentina andLitex Lovech in Bulgaria. He also had trials with bothCentral Córdoba andSarmiento in 1997 and the Spanish sideSalamanca in 2000.[4]

His last club wasMagallanes in 2011.[3]

International career

Núñez made seven appearances and scored two goals for theChile national team in 2000. Along with Chile, he won theCopa Ciudad de Valparaíso [es].[5]

Personal life

His nickname isOso (Bear), but he doesn't know its origin.[3]

His son, Daniel,[6] is a professional tennis player.[3]

Post-retirement

Núñez worked in the mining industry atEl Teniente.[3]

Settled inRancagua, Núñez coaches amateur and school football teams and owns a football academy.[7]
