The ball girl seemed aware that the ball was coming towards her and turned away but it unintentionally struck her anyway, causing her discomfort and tears. After a consultation with officials, Kato and Sutjiadi were defaulted. The punishment received surprise and backlash from some viewers and tennis commentators. Former playerGilles Simon criticized Bouzková's and Sorribes Tormo's actions, and some suggested they should face consequences for escalating the situation and lying about their role in calling for the default.
