Mariam binte Jaafar[a] (born 8 February 1977)[1][2] is a Singaporean politician. A member of the governingPeople's Action Party (PAP), she has been theMember of Parliament (MP) for theWoodlands division ofSembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2020.

Early life and education

Mariam grew up in a 1-roomHDB flat with her parents and siblings.[3] Her father was aMalay language teacher while her mother was a nurse.[3]

She attendedRaffles Girls' Primary School for three years before transferring toBukit View Primary School.[3] When she was 13 years old, Mariam received the MENDAKI Scholarship from then-Deputy Prime MinisterGoh Chok Tong.[4]

Mariam attendedRaffles Girls' School andRaffles Junior College before graduating fromStanford University in 2000 with aBachelor of Science degree and aMaster of Science degree inelectrical andelectronics engineering.[3]

She subsequently went on to complete aMaster of Business Administration degree atHarvard Business School in 2006.[5]

Career

Following her graduation from Harvard Business School, she worked atBoston Consulting Group.[3][6] She is currently a Managing Director and Partner at the BCG office in Singapore and is a core member of the firm's Technology, Media & Telecommunications and Financial Institutions practices.[7]

In 2016, Mariam was chosen to be a member of the Committee on the Future Economy, chaired by Finance MinisterHeng Swee Keat.[8] Mariam serves on the board of directors at theGovernment Technology Agency and at theSentosa Development Corporation.[9][10][11] She is also on the board of governors at her alma mater,Raffles Girls' School.[12]

Political career

In the2020 election, Mariam was nominated as a candidate of the rulingPeople's Action Party (PAP) forSembawang GRC.[13] On 10 July, she was elected to theParliament, defeating the opposition candidates from theNational Solidarity Party (NSP).[14]

Mariam is appointed as Vice-Chairperson of Sembawang Town Council (SBTC) since 2020. Mariam is part of the Government Parliamentary Committeeunder Health where she serves as chairman since 2025.

Personal life

Mariam is married toHeng Teck Thai.[15][16]
