TheMaremma (/məˈrɛmə/,Italian:[maˈremma]; fromLatinmaritima,lit. 'maritime [land]') is a geographical region inTuscany and northernLazio. The largest city isGrosseto.
The Maremma has an area of about5000 km2. The central part corresponds with theprovince of Grosseto, and it extends northward toCecina inTuscany, and southwards into Lazio as far asCivitavecchia. The territory is mainly flat and hilly.[1]
The Maremma has given rise to, or given its name to, several breeds of domestic animal. These include two breeds ofworking horse, theMaremmano and theCavallo Romano della Maremma Laziale, formerly used bybutteri andcavalcanti; theMaremmana breed of large grey cattle; theMaremmano breed of shepherd's guard-dog; and theMacchiaiola Maremmana breed of small pig, so named because it was keptextensively, left to roam in the woodland.[1]
