Mareşal (transl. Marshal) is the highest rank in theTurkish Land Forces andTurkish Air Force.[1] It is the equivalent of afield marshal in other countries.[2]
The rank ofMareşal can trace its origins to theOttoman Empire, where the rank ofMushir (Arabic:مشير) was bestowed upon senior commanders upon order of the rulingSultan.[citation needed]
