Marcos Andres Giron (/ɡˈrn/ghee-ROHN; born July 24, 1993;Spanish:Girón)[3] is an American professionaltennis player. He has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 37 achieved on August 5, 2024 and a doubles ranking of No. 194 achieved on August 1, 2022. Giron won the singles title at the2014 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships forUCLA.[4] He has won anATP Tour title at the2024 Hall of Fame Open.[5]

Early life and background

Giron was born inThousand Oaks, California to Argentine and Ecuadorian parents.[6][7]

He won the boys' singles in theOjai Tennis Tournament in 2009 and the men’s invitational in 2011.[8]

Professional career

2020: First Major wins & top 100

Giron reached the second round of a major for the first time at theUS Open where he defeatedMarc Polmans in five sets. A month later, he reached the second round of theFrench Open, defeatingQuentin Halys in five sets. In both victories, he came back from a two-sets-to-one deficit.

In November, Giron recorded his first top-ten win against seventh seedMatteo Berrettini at theParis Masters.[9]

2021: Major third round, Olympics debut

Giron started his 2021 season at theMurray River Open, an event that was organized as a lead-up tournament to the Australian Open due to other tournaments in Australia being cancelled as a result from theCOVID-19 pandemic. He beat 10th seed,Adrian Mannarino, in the second round.[10] He lost in the third round to eighth seed and eventual champion,Dan Evans.[11] He participated in the main draw as a direct entry at theAustralian Open for a second consecutive year. He lost in the first round to sixth seed and world No. 7,Alexander Zverev, in four sets.[12]

At theOpen Sud de France, Giron was defeated in the first round by qualifierTallon Griekspoor.[13] Getting past qualifying at theRotterdam Open, he was eliminated in the first round by fourth seed, world No. 8, and eventual champion,Andrey Rublev.[14]

In June, Giron reached the third round of a major at theFrench Open for the first time in his career.[15]

AtHalle, Giron reached his first quarterfinal at anATP 500 level tournament as a qualifier where he was defeated byFélix Auger-Aliassime.[16] As a result of this good run, he reached a then career-high of No. 65 on June 21, 2021.

Giron made the second round at theOlympics, beatingNorbert Gombos[17] before losing toKei Nishikori in three sets.[18]

In September at theSofia Open, Giron reached his fourth quarterfinal of the season (with quarterfinal appearances in Halle, Metz and Winston-Salem) after defeating third seedAlex de Minaur in the second round.[19] He later beat 8th seedJohn Millman in 70 minutes to move into his first career ATP tour-level semifinal,[20] where he lost to second seedGaël Monfils.[21] As a result, he reached a new career-high ranking in the top 60, at world No. 59 on October 4, 2021.

2022: Top 50 & first ATP Tour final

Giron started his 2022 season at the first edition of theMelbourne Summer Set 1. He lost in the first round to qualifierRičardas Berankis.[22] At theSydney Classic, he was defeated in the first round by Australian wildcardJordan Thompson.[23] At theAustralian Open, he was beaten in the first round by sixth seed, world No. 5, and eventual championRafael Nadal.[24]

Seeded seventh at the first edition of theDallas Open, Giron upset world No. 19Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals to reach his second ATP tour semifinal.[25] He lost in his semifinal match to fourth seedJenson Brooksby in three sets despite holding four match points.[26] InDelray Beach, he was defeated in the second round byJohn Millman.[27] At theMexican Open in Acapulco, he upset eighth seed and world No. 17Pablo Carreño Busta in the second round.[28] He lost in the quarterfinals to third seed and world No. 4Stefanos Tsitsipas.[29] At theIndian Wells Masters, he was eliminated in the first round byLorenzo Musetti.[30] InMiami, he lost in the first round toMárton Fucsovics.[31]

Giron started his clay court season at theU.S. Men's Clay Court Championships. He lost in the first round to world No. 30Frances Tiafoe.[32] At theMonte-Carlo Masters, he was defeated in the first round by eventual finalistAlejandro Davidovich Fokina.[33] InBarcelona, he lost in the first round toFederico Coria.[34] At theBMW Open inMunich, he fell in the first round toHugo Gaston.[35] At theMadrid Open, he lost in the first round of qualifying toAlejandro Tabilo.[36] On his debut at theItalian Open as a lucky loser, he upset 12th seedDiego Schwartzman in the second round.[37] He lost in the third round toFélix Auger-Aliassime.[38] InGeneva, he lost in the first round toIlya Ivashka.[39] He made his top 50 debut on 16 May 2022. At theFrench Open, he was defeated in the first round byGrigor Dimitrov.[40]

Giron started his grass court season at theBOSS Open inStuttgart. He lost in the first round to German wildcardJan-Lennard Struff, despite having two match points in the third settiebreak.[41] At theHalle Open, he was defeated in the first round by Félix Auger-Aliassime.[42] InMallorca, he reached the quarterfinals where he lost to second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.[43] AtWimbledon, he upset 24th seedHolger Rune in the first round.[44] He lost in the second round toAlex Molčan.[45]

Giron started his US Open series at theAtlanta Open. He lost in the first round toKwon Soon-woo despite leading by a break in the third set.[46] At theCiti Open inWashington, D.C., he was defeated in the first round by eventual championNick Kyrgios.[47] Getting past qualifying at theNational Bank Open in Montreal, he lost in the first round toRoberto Bautista Agut.[48] Making it past qualifying at theWestern & Southern Open, he beatDavid Goffin in the first round.[49] He was defeated in the second round byBautista Agut.[50] At theUS Open, he lost in the first round to Frances Tiafoe.[51]

Seeded third at theSan Diego Open, Giron reached his maiden ATP tour final after defeatingDan Evans in his semifinal match.[52] He lost in the final toBrandon Nakashima.[53] Competing at the first edition of theGijón Open, he was defeated in the second round byDominic Thiem in three sets.[54] InAntwerp, he lost in the first round toSebastian Korda.[55] At theErste Bank Open inVienna, he upsetCameron Norrie in the second round.[56] He lost in his quarterfinal match toGrigor Dimitrov.[57]

2023: French third round, two top 10 wins

Giron started his 2023 season at theAdelaide International 1. He lost in the second round to Australian qualifierAlexei Popyrin.[58] InAuckland, he reached the quarterfinals where he was defeated by second seedCameron Norrie.[59] At theAustralian Open, he lost in the first round toDaniil Medvedev.[60]

Seeded seventh at theDallas Open, Giron made it to the quarterfinals where he was beaten by top seedTaylor Fritz in a rematch from last year.[61] At theDelray Beach Open, he upset eighth seedBen Shelton in the first round.[62] In the second round, he ended the dream ATP Tour debut of 33-year-old qualifierMatija Pecotić.[63] He lost in his quarterfinal match toMiomir Kecmanović.[64] InAcapulco, he was defeated in the first round by compatriotMichael Mmoh.[65] At theBNP Paribas Open, he was eliminated from the tournament in the second round byFrances Tiafoe.[66] At theMiami Open, he fell in the first round to qualifierCristian Garín.[67]

Giron started his clay-court season at theU.S. Men's Clay Court Championships. Seeded seventh, he lost in the second round to qualifierTomáš Macháč.[68] At theBMW Open, he upset seventh seedRoberto Carballés Baena in the first round.[69] He ended up reaching the quarterfinals where he was defeated byBotic van de Zandschulp.[70] Playing at theMadrid Open, he lost in the second round to 25th seedSebastián Báez.[71]He reached the third round at the2023 French Open for a second time in his career and overall at a Major level defeating qualifierHamad Međedović andJiří Lehečka.

Giron qualified for theCanadian Open, with wins overNick Chappell andRadu Albot. After defeatingEmil Ruusuvuori in the first round, he upset world No. 6Holger Rune in three sets, the biggest win of his career and second top-10 win.[72] He then lost to compatriotTommy Paul in the third round.[73]At the ATP 5002023 Japan Open Tennis Championships he reached the semifinals as a qualifier after defeating home favoriteYoshihito Nishioka, second seedCasper Ruud, his third top-10 win,[74] and eight seedFélix Auger-Aliassime, last two matches in straight sets.

Giron was coached by formerUCLA teammateKarue Sell during the2023 season.[75]

2024: First ATP title, top 40

Giron reached his second ATP final at the2024 Dallas Open defeating top seedFrances Tiafoe and fourth seedAdrian Mannarino in straight sets before losing toTommy Paul.[76][77] The following week at the2024 Delray Beach Open, he reached for the first time a consecutive ATP semifinal (his sixth in his career), defeatingEmilio Nava,[78] again fourth seed Adrian Mannarino this time in three sets, and wildcardPatrick Kypson. He lost to defending champion and top seedTaylor Fritz in straight sets. As a result he reached a new career-high ranking in the top 45 on 19 February 2024.

At the beginning of the grass season, at the2024 BOSS Open in Stuttgart, Giron defeatedAndy Murray. InHalle, he upset fourth seedAndrey Rublev, his first top 10 win on this surface, to reach the round of 16.[79] Next he defeatedMatteo Berrettini in three sets to reach the quarterfinals.[80] His good form continued at the next grass court tournament, the2024 Eastbourne International where he defeated defending champion and fifth seedFrancisco Cerundolo in the first round.[81] At the2024 Wimbledon Championships, he also reached the second round with a win over wildcardHenry Searle.[82]

Giron won his first ATP title at the2024 Hall of Fame Open, defeatingAlex Michelsen in the final making him thetenth first-time ATP Tour champion for 2024.[83][84] En route to the title, he registered wins overAlex Bolt in the quarterfinals[85] andChristopher Eubanks in the last four.[86] As a result he reached a new career-high ranking of No. 38 on 22 July 2024.

2025: Australian 3rd round, top 5 wins

Giron reached the third round of the2025 Australian Open for the first time defeatingTomas Martin Etcheverry in five sets.[87]

At the2025 BNP Paribas Open Giron took out the world No. 5 and fourth seedCasper Ruud to reach the third round at the tournament for the second time. It was his first top 5 win in his career.[88][89][90] He followed that with toppling down another seeded player, 26th seedAlexei Popyrin to reach a Masters fourth round for the first time in his career.[91]
