Marco Micheli (born 1983) is an Italianastronomer and adiscoverer of minor planets. He is a researcher at theCentre for Earth Observation ofESA'sSpace Situational Awareness Programme in Italy.[1]
Micheli was born inBrescia, Italy, in 1983. He graduated in 2007 in astronomy and astrophysics at theUniversity of Pisa with a thesis on theYORP effect, and moved for his doctorate to theUniversity of Hawaii where he studiedNear-Earth objects and how their streams causemeteor showers.[2] He then moved toESA's Centre for Earth Observation in Frascati, Italy.[3]
As a member of thePan-STARRS astronomical survey team, he holds the record of newasteroids detected in a single night since 29 January 2011.[4] According to theMinor Planet Center (MPC) he discovered between 2005 and 2010 twelve asteroids, partly in collaboration withWladimiro Marinello andGianpaolo Pizzetti(see list).
In June 2018 he published a study on1I/ʻOumuamua, the firstInterstellar object, where the discovery of a non-gravitational acceleration acting on the object is reported. This suggests that the celestial body may be acomet, although it has not shown any noticeable activity in the visual spectrum during transit in the Solar System.[5][6]
