Marco Marsilio (born 17 February 1968) has beenPresident of Abruzzo since 23 February 2019.[3]

Biography

Born inRome[4] to parents fromTocco da Casauria,Abruzzo,[4] Marsilio graduated in Philosophy[4] at theSapienza University of Rome and taught Aesthetics, Museology and Marketing applied to Cultural Heritage at theLink Campus University. Between the 1980s and the 1990s, Marsilio took part in student movements and joined the youth movement ofNational Alliance and was elected to the city council ofRome from 1997 to 2008[4] for 3 consecutive terms (1997–2001, 2001–2006, 2006–2008). In the2008 election, Marsilio was elected to theChamber of Deputies withThe People of Freedom,[5] leaving theSilvio Berlusconi's party in December 2012 when he took part in founding thenational-conservative partyBrothers of Italy led byGiorgia Meloni. Marsilio tried to seek re-election for theChamber of Deputies in the2013 election, but failed. In the2018 election, Marsilio was elected to theSenate, joining theBrothers of Italy faction.[1]

At the end of 2018,Ignazio La Russa advanced Marsilio's candidacy for the office ofPresident of Abruzzo,[6] the native region of both his parents. Despite Marsilio being born and raised inRome, his candidacy gained support from the entirecentre-right coalition, leading to his victory at the2019 regional election.[3] On 19 March 2019 Marsilio resigned from the Senate in favour ofNicola Calandrini, a member ofBrothers of Italy.[2]
