2018 protest in Seattle, Washington, U.S.
Participants marching to theSeattle Center March for Our Lives Seattle was aprotest march forgun control reform held inSeattle on March 24, 2018, in conjunction withMarch for Our Lives , a student-led initiative in response to theParkland high school shooting. Part of a series of rallies and marches in more than 800 cities across the United States and other parts of the world, estimates indicated as many as 50,000 people participated in Seattle.[ 1] [ 2]
The protest received support fromSeattle Public Schools .[ 3] King County Council passed a March for Our Lives motion.[ 4] [ 5]
Local organizers and planning [ edit ] Local organizers included Emilia Allard, Rhiannon Rasaretnam,[ 6] [ 7] Lina Waughman,[ 8] and Catherine Zhu. Students raised approximately $40,000 viaGoFundMe for permits and security.[ 1]
Lyft offered free transportation toCal Anderson Park for participants.[ 9] Metro andSound Transit made plans for increased service.[ 10]
Participants near the intersection ofPine Street andBroadway People gathered atCal Anderson Park onCapitol Hill and marched throughdowntown Seattle to theSeattle Center via Pine Street and Fourth Avenue.[ 11] [ 12] [ 13]
Speakers and performers included GovernorsJay Inslee andDan Malloy ,[ 14] state attorney generalBob Ferguson ,Brandi Carlile , andDave Matthews .[ 15] Carlile performed "The Joke ", a cover ofBob Dylan 's "The Times They Are a'Changin' ", and "Hold Out Your Hand".[ 8] Maria Cantwell also attended.[ 16]
