Cléver Marcelo Romero Silva (born 4 July 1976) is a Uruguayan retiredfootballer who played as adefensive midfielder, and is amanager.
After emerging atPeñarol he spent seven years of his professional career in Spain, notably at the service ofMálaga (six seasons), and played forUruguay at the2002 World Cup.
Born inMontevideo, Romero played in the beginning of his career for local teamsDefensor Sporting andPeñarol. In the middle of 2001 he was bought byLa Liga clubMálaga CF, teaming up with countrymanDarío Silva. He was instrumental at theAndalusia side during his first four years, helping them to thequarter-finals of the 2002–03UEFA Cup,via theIntertoto Cup.[1]
In his final two seasons, however, Romero was virtually absent from the lineups, with2006–07 being spent, with no success, inSegunda División.[1] In early 2008 he had a brief spell with neighboursLucena CF ofSegunda División B[1] and, on 4 February 2009, signed withCarolina RailHawks FC of theUSL First Division.[2] It quickly became apparent that he had suffered significant knee injuries which were not widely publicised, but subsequently all was revealed; physical problems limited him to onesubstitute appearance in a pre-seasonexhibition game, and he was released in April without having featured in the league.[3]
Romero started working as a manager also in Spain, with amateursAlhaurín de la Torre CF. He returned to Málaga in 2014, joining newly appointedJavi Gracia's coaching staff.[1]
On 28 December 2016, followingJuande Ramos' dismissal, Romero was appointed first-team manager indefinitely.[4] The following 7 March, he was relieved of his duties.[5]
Romero made his debut for theUruguay national team on 20 September 1995, in a 1–3 away friendly defeat againstIsrael. After taking part in twoCopa América editions,[6][7] he played two games for his country at the2002 FIFA World Cup (the group stage draws toFrance andSenegal).[8][9]
In total, Romero earned 24caps in a nine-year span.
