Marcel Granollers Pujol (Catalan pronunciation:[məɾˈsɛlɣɾənuˈʎespuˈʒɔl];Spanish:[maɾˈθelɣɾanoˈʎeɾspuˈʝol];[a] born 12 April 1986) is a Spanish professionaltennis player. He reached a career-high doublesranking ofworld No. 1 on 6 May 2024, becoming the second Spanish man to achieve the feat (afterEmilio Sánchez Vicario in 1989).[1] He is a Grand Slam champion at the2025 French Open and at the2025 US Open withHoracio Zeballos. He also has a career-high singles ranking of No. 19 achieved on 23 July 2012.[2]
Granollers has won 36ATP titles, 4 in singles and 32 in doubles, including also the2012 ATP World Tour Finals in doubles with compatriotMarc López. Additionally, Granollers also has 5 runner-up finishes at the2014 French Open &2014 US Open with López, at the2019 US Open, at the2021 &2023Wimbledon Championships with Zeballos.
Granollers' brotherGerard is also a tennis player, and they have won five Challenger doubles titles together.
Granollers made the first round of theWimbledon tournament in 2006, but lost toAndrei Pavel. In the qualifying rounds, he beatStéphane Robert,Konstantinos Economidis andMarco Chiudinelli.[3]
In 2007, Granollers won theNaples and Rome Challengers for doubles withFlavio Cipolla, and theMaspalomas Challenger for doubles withMarc López. At the2007 French Open, he made the second round of the men's doubles tournament withFeliciano López before they lost in three close sets to the number 4 seedsFabrice Santoro andNenad Zimonjić, who won 7–5, 1–6, 6–4. He lost at the French and Wimbledon Championships both times in the second round of qualifying for the main draws.
2008 saw Granollers qualify for theAustralian OpenSingles Draw, but lost toEvgeny Korolev in straight sets in the first round.[4] He reached the quarterfinals of the2008 Abierto Mexicano Telcel inAcapulco, Mexico, anInternational Series Gold tournament, before losing toJosé Acasuso 7–6, 6–3. On 20 April, he won his first ATP singles title at theU.S. Men's Clay Court Championships, defeating World No. 8James Blake in the final.[5] He had saved two match points in the semifinals.[6] The previous day, he andPablo Cuevas lost in the doubles final.Following Rafael Nadal's announcement that he would not play the Davis Cup Final at Argentina on 21–23 November, Spain's CaptainEmilio Sánchez announced that Marcel Granollers would replace Nadal. This was Granollers' first Davis Cup appearance, although he did not play any matches.
In 2009, Granollers won three ATP doubles titles at the2009 Brasil Open, the2009 Copa Telmex, and the2009 Kremlin Cup, teaming up withTommy Robredo,Alberto Martín, andPablo Cuevas respectively.
In the first round of the2010 Australian Open, Granollers pulled off a remarkable comeback when he recovered from 2 sets down against world no.8 and French Openfinalist,Robin Söderling. He then lost toAlejandro Falla in the 2nd round.
Granollers lost in the first round of the Australian Open to eventual championNovak Djokovic, and he didn't win consecutive matches until the2011 Miami Masters, where he got to the fourth round.[7]
In July, he beatStanislas Wawrinka,Mikhail Youzhny, andFernando Verdasco to win his first title of the year and his second career title at theSwiss Open.[8][9] In the US Open, he reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, to break into the top 30.[10]
In November, Granollers claimed the title at theValencia Open by defeating Juan Mónaco in three sets and said, "Winning here has been the biggest achievement in my whole career."[11] He beat four Top 20 players:Alexandr Dolgopolov,Marin Čilić,Gaël Monfils andJuan Martín del Potro en route to the final at theATP World Tour 500 tournament.[11]
Granollers played for the victoriousSpain Davis Cup team in2011, losing the doubles rubber (withFernando Verdasco) in the quarterfinal againstUnited States.[12]
Marcel Granollers reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time atFrench Open, losing to David Ferrer in three straight sets.[13] Granollers lost toMarin Čilić in the final match ofCroatia Open on 15 July 2012.[14]
Playing doubles alongside countrymanMarc López, he went 3–4 in finals, winning titles at theItalian Open,Swiss Open and theATP World Tour Finals. Granollers and Lopez were the first Spanish pair to play at theseason-ending championships sinceSergio Casal andEmilio Sánchez in 1994.[15] They won the title defeating Indian duoMahesh Bhupathi andRohan Bopanna in the final.
He also partnered López at the 2012 Summer Olympics.[16]
Granollers reached a career-high ranking of World No. 4 in doubles on 25 February 2013.
He made it also to the fourth round of the US Open in singles for the first time, where he lost to top-seedNovak Djokovic in straight sets.
In 2014, he had a very consistent doubles performances at the French and US Opens, making the finals at both events with partnerMarc López. They qualified for their third consecutiveATP Finals where they lost in the round robin stage for a second year in a row.

Granollers suffered a significant loss in form, with only one tour-level late round appearance: the semifinals inZagreb Indoors losing toAndreas Seppi. His 2015 year-end singles ranking dropped to No. 84.
He reached the quarterfinals of the2016 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters before losing toGaël Monfils in straight sets, making the main draw as a lucky loser.
He made it to the 4th round of the2016 French Open afterRafael Nadal withdrew from their 3rd round encounter. He lost out toDominic Thiem in 4 sets.
In doubles, Granollers reached the finals in both the2015 and2017 Masters 1000 in Rome, withMarc López andIvan Dodig respectively. He also reached the final of the2017 Rolex Paris Masters with Dodig. In 2018, he won theParis Masters, partneringRajeev Ram.
With his new partnerHoracio Zeballos, Granollers won 6 titles starting in August 2019, and also made his first Grand Slam doubles final at the2019 US Open, losing to the World No. 1 and top seeded pair Farah/Cabal.The pair won three Masters 1000: the2019 Canadian Open, the2020 Italian Open and the2021 Mutua Madrid Open.[17] As a result, he reentered the top 10 in doubles at World No. 9 on 9 September 2019 and No. 7 on 21 September 2020. He also reentered the top 5 on 12 July 2021 following the final at the2021 Wimbledon Championships where they lost to World No. 1 and top seeds Mektic/Pavic.[18]
In August 2021, they reached a second Masters 1000 final for 2021 and fourth overall at the2021 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati defeating Arévalo/Fognini.[19] They defeatedAustin Krajicek andSteve Johnson in the final to win their fourth Masters.[20]
Granollers and Zebalos qualified for their third consecutive ATP Finals, having advanced to the semifinals of the year-end championships in 2020 and 2021. It was Granollers seventh participation.[21]
At the2023 Australian Open Granollers and Zeballos reached back-to-back semifinals.
At the2023 French Open they upset top seedsWesley Koolhof andNeal Skupski to reach also back-to-back semifinals.[22] They lost to eventual championsIvan Dodig andAustin Krajicek.
The pair won their first Masters of the season and fifth overall as a team at the2023 Rolex Shanghai Masters. As a result, he returned to the top 10 on 16 October 2023.
Granollers and Zebalos qualified for their fourth consecutiveATP Finals. It was Granoller's eight participation.[23] Granollers with Zeballos reached his second ATP Finals championship match but lost toJoe Salisbury andRajeev Ram.
At the2024 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Granollers and Zeballos reached the final, saving a match point.[24]At the2024 Miami Open where he reached the semifinals,[25] he recorded his 500th doubles career win en route.[26]
At the2024 Monte-Carlo Masters Granollers and Zeballos reached their third Masters semifinal in a row.[27]A week later, on 22 April 2024, he reached a new career-high doubles ranking of world No. 3.At the next Masters 1000, the2024 Mutua Madrid Open, with Zeballos, he reached the quarterfinals and both players moved into a new career-high ranking of No. 2. With reaching their fourth Masters semifinal of the season, with a win overHugo Nys andJan Zielinski, they became joint World No. 1 on 6 May 2024.[28][1] They reached again a Masters final at theItalian Open, and fourth final for the season, defeating the newly formed pair ofAlexander Bublik andBen Shelton.[29] They won their sixth Masters title as a team defeatingMarcelo Arévalo andMate Pavić.
At the2024 French Open, they reached their third consecutive semifinal at this Major defeating 15th seeds Hugo Nys and Jan Zieliński, and thenTomas Machac andZhang Zhizhen.[30]
He won his ninth Masters title at the2024 National Bank Open, second for the year and at this tournament, and tenth as a team with Zeballos.[31]
Granollers and Zeballos reached the2025 French Open final, their fourth major final together, defeatingHugo Nys andEdouard Roger-Vasselin.[32] They defeatedJoe Salisbury andNeal Skupski in the final, 6–0, 6–7(5–7), 7–5 to win title.[33] It was both players' firstGrand Slam men's doubles title, following five previous runner-up finishes for Granollers and three for Zeballos.
Granollers' good serve and net skills account for his excellent doubles record. His comparatively technically weak groundstrokes are underpowered with low takebacks on both wings but they provide a decent defensive framework.[34] He is also known for his heavy grunting, so much as to result in ridicule and accusations of gamesmanship due to its loud volume and questionable timing during matches.[35][36][37]
