Marc Preston Webb[1] (born August 31, 1974) is an Americanfilmmaker andmusic video director. He made hisfeature film directorial debut in 2009 with theromantic comedy500 Days of Summer. He then directedThe Amazing Spider-Man (2012) andThe Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), which later were dubbed the "Webb-Verse" byMarvel Studios in 2021.[2] He also directedGifted andThe Only Living Boy in New York (both 2017 dramas) and theDisneylive-action remake ofSnow White (2025). His next planned film isDay Drinker (2026).
Webb was born on 31 August 1974 inBloomington, Indiana, the son of Margaret Ruth (née Stocker), a scientist, and Norman Lott Webb, who works in math education at theUniversity of Wisconsin inMadison, Wisconsin.[1][3] When he was eighteen months old, Marc's family moved to Madison and he grew up there.[4][5] He graduated fromMadison West High School in the city in 1992. He attendedColorado College[4] and then the University of Wisconsin in Madison, graduating with anEnglish degree.[6]
Marc Webb began as an editor before turning to directing music videos. He toldThe Daily Beast: "The very first video I did was for a band called The Shame Idols inBirmingham, Alabama, and I paid for it on a credit card and my mom loaned me about $500 to finish it. It was actually about a superhero—aCatwoman-y type of thing. This woman who sewed the costume together, and we shot it on 16mm film. You can't see it anywhere and it's not on YouTube—and I'm glad it's not. The first video that got shown was aBlues Traveler video called "Canadian Rose," but I just did the concept stuff for it."[7] Between 1999 and 2009, he directed videos for the likes ofGood Charlotte,Evanescence,AFI,3 Doors Down,Green Day,My Chemical Romance, andSnow Patrol.[8]
His feature-length debut,500 Days of Summer, starringJoseph Gordon-Levitt andZooey Deschanel, was released in July 2009 to a positive critical reception.[9] In January 2010,Columbia Pictures hired Webb to directThe Amazing Spider-Man, areboot of theSpider-Man film franchise, released in July 2012 and starringAndrew Garfield andEmma Stone.[10] He returned to direct the sequel,The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which was released on May 2, 2014. Developing the 2021Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) filmSpider-Man: No Way Home forMarvel Studios,Chris McKenna andErik Sommers officially dubbed thefictional universe of Webb'sSpider-Man films as theWebb-Verse in his honor.[2] In November 2021, it was revealed that he andSam Raimi, were brought on as creative consultants for the film.[11] In 2015, Webb directed promotional ads for a partnership betweenSamsung andAvengers: Age of Ultron.[12][citation needed]
Webb is represented by DNA inHollywood, California and Academy Productions Ltd in theUnited Kingdom. In February 2019, he signed on to direct thelive-action reimagined version of the 2016 Japaneseanime filmYour Name[13] before he was replaced on September 18, 2020 byLee Isaac Chung and a year later byCarlos López Estrada.[14] In May 2019, it was announced that Webb will direct alive-action adaptation ofDisney'sSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs.[15]
In 2013,Christopher Keyser and Webb pitched the mystery dramaThe Society toShowtime, but the network later decided to pass on the series.[16]Netflix turned the pitch into a series instead; created by Keyser and executive produced by both Keyser and Webb,The Society premiered on May 19, 2019.[17] In July 2019, it was announced that Webb and Black Lamb Productions, his production company signed a deal withABC Studios.[18] In March 2022, Webb signed on to direct the supernatural thrillerDay Drinker, written by Zach Dean.[19][20]
On June 8, 2018, Webb's girlfriend Jane Herman had a daughter, Georgia.[21] The couple married on October 4, 2019.[22] Their son, Walter, was born on April 5, 2021.[23]

Webb's signature is a white lamb, which appears in a few of his videos. InBrand New's "Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades" video, the lamb appears on the door beforeJesse Lacey enters the bar. It also is on the shirt of a girl in the bar. InYellowcard's "Ocean Avenue" and "Rough Landing, Holly" videos, the lamb appears on a briefcaseRyan Key carries.
