Marc Singer (born January 29, 1948) is a Canadian-American actor best known for his roles in theBeastmaster film series, as Mike Donovan in the original 1980s TV seriesV, and as Matt Cantrell in 1983Dallas.

Early life

Singer was born inVancouver,British Columbia and raised inCorpus Christi, Texas.[1] He has two brothers (Claude and Gregory) and one sister,Lori, an actress and cellist.[2] His father,Jacques Singer, was a Polish immigrant and symphonyconductor; his mother, Leslie (née Wright), a concertpianist.[3]

Career

Before the height of his career, Singer appeared in thesequel to the miniseriesRoots as Col. Warner's elder son Andy.[4] He had originally auditioned for the role of Jim Warner, but the producers felt he was better suited for the Andy Warner role.

In the 1970s, Singer had a small breakthrough role in thePlanet of the Apes TV series playing a gladiator.

He found fame in the early '80s with the filmThe Beastmaster and its sequels, in which he played the title role, Dar,[5] and as Mike Donovan in the 1983 miniseriesV, the 1984 sequelV: The Final Battle, and the TV seriesV: The Series.[6]

Other roles include the 1982 filmIf You Could See What I Hear (where he portrayed blind musicianTom Sullivan),[7]Body Chemistry,[8]Something for Joey (as football starJohn Cappelletti),[1]Watchers II,[9]High Desert Kill,[10]The Fighter,Go Tell the Spartans andDead Space, as well as General Klaus Von Kraut inA Man Called Sarge.[11]

Singer voiced the character ofMan-Bat onBatman: The Animated Series.[6] He has guest-starred on television series, such asBarnaby Jones, where he played in the episode titled "Trap Play" (01/07/1975).[12] This is a role he played alongside Nick Nolte in the earlier years. He also appeared in another episode ofBarnaby Jones, titled "Price of Terror" (10/10/75).[13] He also starred as Matt Cantrell in season nine ("the dream season") ofDallas;[14]The Twilight Zone;The Hitchhiker;Simon & Simon;Murder, She Wrote;The Young and the Restless;The Ray Bradbury Theater; andHighlander: The Series.[15]

Singer is active in theater and playedPetruchio in theAmerican Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) production ofShakespeare'sTaming of the Shrew, as well as Christian inCyrano de Bergerac.[16] BothTaming of the Shrew andCyrano were filmed.[17][18]

Singer appeared in the last episode of season 2 of the new version ofV, airing on March 15, 2011; however, instead of reprising his role of Mike Donovan, he plays a new character called Lars Tremont.[19] He was in a recurring role as GeneralMatthew Shrieve onThe CW television seriesArrow'sthird season.[20]
