Marc Hideo Miyake (三宅英雄,Miyake Hideo; born July 28, 1971) is an Americanlinguist who specializes inhistorical linguistics, particularly the study ofOld Japanese andTangut.

Biography

Miyake was born inʻAiea, Hawaii, in 1971, and attendedPunahou School inHonolulu, graduating in 1989. He studied Japanese language and literature atUniversity of California, Berkeley, and then studied linguistics at theUniversity of Hawaii at Manoa, earning his doctorate in 1999 underAlexander Vovin, with a dissertation entitledThe Phonology of Eighth-Century Japanese Revisited: Another Reconstruction Based upon Written Records.^[1]^[2] He is best known for his work on the phonetic reconstruction ofOld Japanese, but is also known for his work on the extinctTangut language.^{[citation needed]}

Between 2015 and 2019, Miyake was a research assistant at theBritish Museum, working on the decipherment ofPyu inscriptions.^[3] At the same time he was also a research associate in theDepartment of Linguistics at theSchool of Oriental and African Studies.^[4]
