Marc Guggenheim (born September 24, 1970)[1] is an American screenwriter, television producer, comic book writer, and novelist. He is best known as the creator of the television seriesEli Stone (2008–2009),Arrow (2012–2020), andLegends of Tomorrow (2016–2022), executive producer of the animated seriesTales of Arcadia (2016–2021), as well as the writer of the feature filmsGreen Lantern (2011) andPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013).
Marc Guggenheim was born and raised to aJewish family[2][3] onLong Island, New York.[4] He attended theUniversity at Albany, State University of New York. His brothers are screenwritersEric Guggenheim andDavid Guggenheim.[5]
Guggenheim worked inBoston,Massachusetts as a lawyer at Hutchins Wheeler & Dittmar, and part-time writer for five years.
After aromantic comedy script led to a few meetings with producers, he moved to California to pursue a career as a screenwriter. A script forThe Practice was his first produced work. He eventually served as a producer forLaw & Order,Jack and Bobby,CSI: Miami, andIn Justice.
WithGreg Berlanti, Guggenheim is the co-creator of theABC showEli Stone. He later became executive producer of ABC'sNo Ordinary Family. Guggenheim, together with Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, adapted theGreen Arrow comics into the television seriesArrow. The three, alongsidePhil Klemmer, went on to develop the spin-off seriesLegends of Tomorrow. Guggenheim served as co-showrunner onArrow for seasons 1-6 and 8, and onLegends of Tomorrow for seasons 1-4. In the fall of 2018, he stepped down as showrunner and serve as an executive consultant to both shows.[6] He remained in this role until the shows ended.
WithGuillermo del Toro, he co-wrote the pilot and several episodes of the award-winning animated seriesTales of Arcadia, an original franchise created forNetflix fromDreamWorks Animation, for which he won an Emmy in the category of "Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program" and nominated for several others. He remained as Executive Producer throughout the series' three installments,Trollhunters,3Below andWizards: Tales of Arcadia.
In October 2020, it was announced that Guggenheim would be writing a series based onGreen Lantern alongsideSeth Grahame-Smith, who is showrunning the series, forHBO Max in 2021.[7] However, in October 2022, when Grahame-Smith departed from the series Guggenheim confirmed he would also no longer be involved.[8]
He served as an intern atMarvel for a time in 1990 for editorTerry Kavanagh, and was thecolorist for an eight-pageIceman/Human Torch story while there. His writing experiences also include the comic booksAquaman forDC Comics,Wolverine andThe Punisher for Marvel, andPerfect Dark Zero for Rare Game. He wroteBlade for twelve issues with artistHoward Chaykin.
In 2006, Guggenheim took over the writing ofThe Flash.[9] Guggenheim's run concluded with the death of the fourth Flash,Bart Allen.
In 2007, Guggenheim became one of the rotating team of writers onThe Amazing Spider-Man. His first story appeared inAmazing Spider-Man #549. He also launched a creator-owned comic,Resurrection, forOni Press.
He wrote the comic bookYoung X-Men forMarvel which was launched in April 2008, and in 2008 was working on a comic withHugh Jackman andVirgin Comics,Nowhere Man,[10] and onSuper Zombies forDynamite Entertainment[11] andStephen King.[12]
He wrote the script for the 2009 video gameX-Men Origins: Wolverine, developed byRaven Software, a video game based onthe film of the same name.
Guggenheim was intended to take overAction Comics after theWar of the Supermen limited series,[13] but was replaced byPaul Cornell. Guggenheim instead worked onJustice Society of America.[14][15]
Guggenheim is married to fellow writer-producer and showrunner Tara Butters,[16] who has previously worked on projects includingMarvel'sAgent Carter,ABC'sResurrection andDollhouse.[17]
During the 2023 writers strike Guggenheim sided with the WGA and went on strike.[18][19]
