Marayan (Arabic:مرعيان, also spelledMir'ian) is a village in northwesternSyria, administratively part of theAriha District of theIdlib Governorate. According to theSyria Central Bureau of Statistics, Marayan had a population of 2,274 in the 2004 census.[1] Its inhabitants are predominantlySunni Muslims.[2] Nearby localities includeIhsim andIblin to the south,Sarjah to the east, andal-Rami andAriha to the north.
In the 1960s, Marayan was a small village containing amosque and a spring. In the village's immediate vicinity are the ruins ofByzantine-eragrottoes, which were being used as underground residences in the 1960s.[2]
