José Manuel 'Manolo' Díaz Fernández (born 30 August 1968) is a Spanish professionalfootball manager and formerplayer who played as aforward.
Born inMadrid, Díaz began his managerial career at theJuvenil squad ofReal Madrid, leaving the club in 2006 after the arrival of the new presidentRamón Calderón. He returned to Spain following a brief spell inMexico, being appointed atCDA Navalcarnero in summer 2008.[1]
Díaz was named coach ofReal Madrid C a year later, afterFlorentino Pérez's return as president.[2] In2011–12 he led the team to second place in theregular season, and despite losing in theplayoffs, saw them achieve promotion toSegunda División B due to administrative relegations.[1]
On 19 November 2013, Díaz replaced the firedAlberto Toril at the helm of theB side.[3] His first match in charge was four days later, a 0–0 home draw againstCD Numancia.[4] Later that year, he finally took the reserves from the bottom position inSegunda División, having won 13 out of a possible 15 points and four consecutive wins.[5]
In July 2014, Díaz was appointed atSD Ponferradina in the second division.[6] On 31 January 2016, after the sixth loss in seven matches, he was dismissed;[7] the campaign eventuallyended in relegation.[8]
Díaz returned to theSantiago Bernabéu Stadium on 24 June 2017, being appointed youth system coordinator.[9] In late October 2018, asSantiago Solari was namedJulen Lopetegui's successor in the first team, he replaced the former at Castilla.[10]
On 8 September 2021, following a short stint in the Spanish third tier withHércules CF,[11] Díaz was announced as head coach ofIndian Super League sideEast Bengal FC.[12][13][14] He resigned at the end of the year due to a poor start tothe season.[15]
