Mannarkkad, formerly known asMannarghat, is a major municipal town inPalakkad district of the Indian state ofKerala. TheSilent Valley National Park and theAttappadi Reserve Forest are located in Mannarkkad Taluk. Mannarkkad is situated 36 km away from district headquartersPalakkad onNational Highway 966. It is the traditional seat of theMannarghat Moopil Nair.
Mannarkkad andAttappadi were parts ofValluvanad Swaroopam dynasty in medieval period with their headquarters atAngadipuram nearPerinthalmanna in present-dayMalappuram district. According to local legends, the lastCheraman Perumal ruler gave a vast extension of land inSouth Malabar during his journey toMecca to one of their governors,Valluvakonathiri, and left for pilgrimage.[3]
During the last decades of the eighteenth century, the region came under the control of the vastKingdom of Mysore. UnderBritish Raj, it was a part of Valluvanad Taluk of Malappuram Revenue Division inMalabar District. Mannarkkad, along with the towns ofPerinthalmanna,Malappuram,Manjeri,Pandikkad, andTirurangadi, was one of the main centres of theMalabar Rebellion of 1921.[4]
Walluvanad Taluk was divided into sixRevenue blocks:Mankada,Perinthalmanna, Mannarkkad,Ottapalam,Sreekrishnapuram, andPattambi.[5][6] On 1 January 1957,Palakkad district was formed consisting of 6 taluks.[7] Mannarkad was part of Perinthalmanna taluk which was part of Palakkad district until the formation of Malappuram district.[8] During the formation ofMalappuram district on 16 June 1969, theRevenue blocks of Mannarkkad andAttappadi were separated from Perinthalmanna Taluk and Mannarkkad became an independent taluk.[9]
Later some years, a portion ofKaruvarakundu village inEranad Taluk (now Karuvarakundu is a part ofNilambur Taluk) ofMalappuram district was transferred to theSilent Valley area of Mannarkkad Taluk.[10] In 2021Attapady was separated from Mannarkad taluk and became independent taluk with taluk headquarters atAgali.[11][12]
Mannarkkad is located at10°59′N76°28′E / 10.98°N 76.47°E /10.98; 76.47.[13] It has an average elevation of 76 m (249 ft). Mannarkkad is located 36 km north-west of district headquartersPalakkad, alongNational Highway 966 and 100 km north west ofKozhikode. Mannarkkad is located in the foothills of theWestern Ghats.
It is located in the rich biodiversity ofNilgiri Biosphere Reserve.Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary,New Amarambalam Reserved Forest, andNedumkayam Rainforest inNilambur Taluk ofMalappuram district,Attappadi Reserved Forest in Mannarkkad Taluk of Palakkad district, andMukurthi National Park ofNilgiris district, are located around Silent Valley National Park.Mukurthi peak, the fifth-highest peak in South India, andAnginda peak are also located in its vicinity.Bhavani River, a tributary ofKaveri River, andKunthipuzha River, a tributary ofBharathappuzha river, originate in the vicinity of Silent Valley. TheKadalundi River has also its origin in Silent Valley.
