Maniema Province (Jimbo la Maniema, inSwahili) is one of 26provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.[3] Itscapital isKindu. The 2020 population was estimated to be 2,856,300.[4]

Toponymy

Henry Morton Stanley explored the area, calling itManyema.[5]: Vol.Two, 96 

Geography

Maniema borders the provinces ofSankuru to the west,Tshopo to the north,North Kivu andSouth Kivu to the east, andLomami andTanganyika to the south.

Administrative divisions

Maniema consists of the city ofKindu and seven territories:Punia,Pangi,Lubutu,Kibombo,Kasongo,Kailo andKabambare.

Economy

Mining is the main industry in the province anddiamonds,copper,gold andcobalt are mined outside ofKindu.[6]

Kailo Territory is home to open pitwolframite andCassiterite mines.[7]
