Manchester Township was one of the manytownships and chapelries which formed theancient parish of Manchester within theSalford hundred ofLancashire, England. It included the area of what is nowManchester city centre and the adjoining area ofAncoats.
In 1792 commissioners, usually known aspolice commissioners, were established for the improvement of the township. Under theMunicipal Corporations Act 1835, themunicipal borough of Manchester was established in 1838 as a local authority area, and included the townships of Manchester,Beswick,Cheetham,Chorlton-on-Medlock andHulme.[1]
