Population centres

[edit]

The electorate includes the following population centres:

In the 2007 boundary redistribution, parts of Paraparaumu located east ofState Highway 1 were added to the electorate's area. The boundaries went unchanged in the 2013/14 and 2020 redistributions.[1][2]

History

[edit]

The electorate was created for the introduction ofmixed-member proportional (MMP) representation in1996 from thePorirua electorate, and from the southern part of theKapiti electorate, consisting ofParaparaumu south of the airport,Raumati South andRaumati Beach. The 1996 election was won byLabour'sGraham Kelly, who was member for the formerPorirua electorate. He retired ahead of the 2002 election, LuamanuvaoWinnie Laban became the new MP.

After the resignation of Laban 10 August 2010,[3] Faafoi won theresulting by-election with 10,980 votes (46.4%), becoming the first MP of Tokelauan descent.[4]Hekia Parata from theNational Party was placed second and received 9,574 (41.6%), giving Faafoi a margin of 1,080 votes (4.82%).[5] This was a significant decrease of Laban's majority of 6,155 (17.7%) at the2008 general election.[6] Faafoi more than doubled that margin in2011,[5] and had a 7,953 vote margin in2014.[7] Faafoi would not contest the seat in the2020 general election.[8]Barbara Edmonds would subsequently win the seat.

The electorate will be abolished for the 2026 general election to accommodate the loss of oneNorth Island electorate, with its population centers divided betweenKapiti andKenepuru electorates.[9]
