Malaspina Strait is astrait in the northernGulf of Georgia-Sunshine Coast region ofBritish Columbia,Canada. It separatesTexada Island from the upperSunshine Coast-Malaspina Peninsula area on the adjacent mainland.
The strait and the peninsula were named in 1859 by CaptainGeorge Henry Richards of thePlumper in honour ofAlessandro Malaspina, an Italian noble andSpanish naval officer who commanded one of the exploration ships during the Spanish exploration of theBritish Columbia Coast. Richards' choice of name was probably influenced by the nearby Malaspina Inlet, named in 1792 byGaliano andValdés, who had been officers serving under Malaspina.[1]
